Drones Are Now Catching Cargo Thieves Mid-Heist. Here’s Why That’s Not Enough.
Drones are helping law enforcement catch cargo thieves in real time — but the freight industry is still reacting after the damage is done. Prevention has to happen before pickup.

The footage is wild. The arrests are satisfying. But here’s what the headlines aren’t telling you.
That same week in Illinois:
- $500,000 in protein powder recovered from a Bridgeview warehouse
- $100,000 in stolen coffee found in Melrose Park
- $400,000 in lobsters headed for Costco — still missing
Two of the three arrested were already out on previous burglary charges.
Drones catching thieves after the fact is reactive.
The freight industry loses billions annually because we’re still playing defense.
The real solution is preventing theft before pickup ever happens. That means real-time carrier verification, unified data sources, and stopping fraudsters from impersonating legitimate trucking companies in the first place.
Catching criminals is good.
Not needing to catch them is better.
